Fashion is everywhere you look, from glossy magazines to television, from advertising to every clothes shop on the high street. It’s a really big business and is an eternally popular career choice for all sorts of people. But what is it really like to work in the fashion industry? What sorts of jobs are available?
Probably the first thing to say is that fashion is a highly competitive industry, so if you want to make a success of your fashion career, you’ll need passion and commitment. The good news is that it’s a diverse industry, covering everything from designing clothes to retail jobs, so you’re bound to find something to suit you.
Working in retail is one popular way of getting started. This is a good option as there are always lots of retail jobs available and it’s a great choice for people looking for part time jobs, so if you’re a student studying fashion at university, it gives you much needed practical experience.
Internships or Graduate jobs are also common in fashion and this can be a fantastic way of getting your foot in the door of some of the most competitive parts of the business. You’ll need to be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up, but this is actually a really good thing as it means you’ll get to know the business inside out and ultimately be much more attractive candidate because of it.
The important thing to remember is that fashion contains lots of aspects. Not everyone can be a top designer or a supermodel, but there are still loads of other career options, from managing boutiques to buying fabric and being a fashion journalist. Whatever path you choose, you’re sure to be in for an exciting time.
